Should I get a Proto Slg 09 basic or the Spyder Pilot 09?
I am looking to get a paintball gun and am only a beginner. I first thought of buying a Spyder but then everyone says that they are not very good. I then thought of buying a proto slg 09 but I researched and found out that you need an hpa compressed air tank which is much more than a c02 tank. I need help on which gun to buy and if I buy the proto, I don't know what tank I should buy and what hopper to get. I was looking at a PMI 48/3000 tank and I was thinking of buying a hopper that loads 20bps for around $45, but I'm not sure If I should get a hopper that only loads 18bps for around $35. I was also wondering if I should get so paintball pants or if I should wait to get better.

I'd recommend an SLG over a Spyder. Lighter, smaller, slightly better operation (SLG is still a sear-tripper like a Spyder but Proto managed to do it without a striker & springs), has a regulator, better stock barrel, board has more settings & features.
Spyders are still good but as time goes on, other companies are starting to make guns in the beginner price range that perform better. Smart Parts started it with the Ion and now the Vibe then Proto followed suit with the PMR & SLG.
Hpa tanks can be found for $50, which is much more than a standard co2 tank but much better & cheaper in the long run (long explanation on why it's better but it's cheaper because most fields only charge once for unlimited hpa fills while co2 costs per fill).
What hoppers are you looking at? Feed rates (18 bps, 20 bps, etc) is somewhat of a misconception as consistency is more important than boasting speed. You could get by with something like a Viewloader Revolution or Invert Reloader if you want to save money but the nature of those loaders (referred to as agitating loaders) doesn't provide the consistent speed of force-fed loaders like Halo/Reloader B's, Vlocitys, etc (although those cost more, much more in some cases).
For most apparel, anything works fine but i always have a hard time recommending any pants aside from paintball-specific ones. Paintball pants really are designed solely for paintball and it shows, in durability without sacrificing flexibility, padding in all the right places, and specific pockets like squeegee slots, etc. As for brand, it's up to you, more or less doesn't make a difference these days. My team wears Empire & JT pants while i wear Proto or Dye.
