How important is an electric hopper in paintball?
I am thinking about buying a paintball gun that features an automatic fire option. I was wondering if an electric hopper would be somthing that I "need" to buy, and if having one would make much of a noticeable difference
It's a question of process. Some hoppers like the Magna are RF linked from the gun to the hopper to maintain constant feed rate to ROF. Which if you're a top end tourney player, I can see the need for but for the rest of us what you need is a hopper that can outstrip the guns rate of fire.
Most fields are capped at 15bps (as are most markers on full auto). Low end force feed hoppers are rated at 14 bps which is fine for a mechanical marker but if you're running an electro you're going to want at least 20bps. So a mid range force feed hopper will tend to be in that range, some will go up to 35bps with a chip.
You also want to look at a hopper with modes for tension and speed settings. I run a VL Velocity and you can adjust the hopper for more brittle paint, so it doesn't end up blending it in the hopper.
The only other downside to a force feed hopper is you'll go through paint very fast
